Thirty-eight-year-old Robert Taylor and seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Taylor are strange bedfellows as CONSPIRATOR tells the story of Maj. Michael Curragh (Robert Taylor), a British army officer in the employ of the USSR. Elizabeth Taylor is Melinda, his young, naive American wife. Michael's Soviet contacts do not like the fact that he is newly wed, but he is seriously in love with his wife and listens closely when she pleads with him to give up his spy chores. The Russkies inform Michael that, as in the Mafia, one does not resign from the spy service of the USSR. He is ordered to kill Melinda. But how does one kill one's wife? Particularly when she is as beautiful as teenage Elizabeth Taylor. Michael goes to meet his contacts at their rendezvous and they are not there. When Michael calls the Russian embassy and gives his name, he is told that he is dead! The picture disintegrates and winds up with Michael putting a gun to himself. A depressing film that might have made more sense with a screenplay by someone like Graham Greene. Benson stuck fairly close to the Slater novel but would have been wise to alter it. Shot in Britain, this film could have easily been done on MGM's London street. Elizabeth Taylor is excellent and sexy in all the love scenes with her screen husband. She was still going to high school, and her tutor dutifully sat on the set to give her lessons in between some of the steamier scenes. leave a comment
