A striking portrayal of the banality of evil. Winter, 1942: Twelve top Nazi officials gather in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee to decide the outcome of "the Jewish question." Featuring a stellar cast (including Stanley Tucci, John Malkovich and Ian McNeice) and based on the minutes of the historic meeting at Wanasee discovered by American investigators after the war, CONSPIRACY is a fascinating look at the inner workings of the Nazi regime. Kenneth Branagh stars as the charismatic Reinhard Heydrich, who bullies and flatters his way towards a unanimous acceptance of genocide. His portrayal of the ultimate "chairman of the board" is dead-on in its insidious mastery of politics and persuasion. The meeting begins with complaints from the Nazi leaders in charge of conquered populations and ghettos, where overpopulation and the threat of disease cause day-to-day problems. What follows is a meticulous account of the Reich’s immigration policies and the subsequent attempt to eradicate all Jewish life from the continent of Europe. The question of the "lawfullness" of genocide is discussed by the twelve men, ten of whom are revealed to be lawyers. The only opponent to the horrific proposal is Dr. Wilhelm Kritzinger (David Threlfall); allegedly the only member of the group who, after the war, expressed regret for his participation in the Holocaust. His conscience however, is slowly worn down and his convictions broken by the wheel of the sinister Nazi machine.
