Mark Twain's popular satirical fantasy is mellowed into an amusingly carefree, lavishly mounted Bing Crosby vehicle, rich in color and pleasant if unmemorable songs. Crosby stars as Hank Martin, a Connecticut blacksmith who is knocked unconscious in a wild rainstorm and wakes up in King Arthur's Camelot. This production boasts wonderful sets and softly focused color lensing by Ray Rennahan. The famed art director Hans Dreier created a spectacular and authentic medieval castle for the film, with an enormous dining hall for King Arthur's knights, a huge ballroom, lush gardens, courtyards, and jousting grounds. Rhonda Fleming's auburn-haired beauty is lovely in the rich Technicolor process and Tay Garnett's direction is smooth and well paced. It was remade and updated by Disney in 1979 as UNIDENTIFIED FLYING ODDBALL. leave a comment
