This solid psychological thriller is heightened by Bogart's subtle portrayal of a calculating wife-killer. A successful architect, Bogie falls in love with Smith, sister of wife Hobart. He has a leg injury that prevents him from walking. He heals sooner than the doctors expect and uses this to cover his murderous plans. His wife goes off to a mountain retreat, leaving Bogie at home alone to work. He follows her, meets her car on a mountain road, then strangles her and puts her into her car, which he pushes over a cliff.
