During WWII, Kata (Bansagi) discovers that her husband has gone underground and that she also must go into hiding. She is told to go to Janos Biro (Andorai) and the two must pretend to be husband and wife. Kata constantly tests Janos, seeing if she will betray him. Eventually the two
become lovers, but drift apart into distrust again. The leading performances and the careful buildup of mood and tension are the things to watch here. Beautifully guided by Szabo, long one of Hungary's leading filmmakers and the director of the superb MEPHISTO, CONFIDENCE was nominated by the
Academy for Best Foreign-Language Film.
