Set at the turn of the century in Coney Island, this film features Romero as the owner of a honky tonk where Grable performs. He and Montgomery are rivals for Grable's affection, and Montgomery also figures that Romero owes half of his club as payment for an earlier favor. Against that backdrop, the film offers a host of song-and-dance numbers and the chance to see Grable's wonderful legs. Silvers and Winninger are memorable during their all-too-brief screen time. Technicolor photography was of the highest quality and all tech credits are topnotch. Songs from the Oscar-nominated score include "Cuddle Up A Little Closer" (Karl Hoschna, Otto Harbach), "Pretty Baby" (Gus Kahn, Tony Jackson, Egbert Van Alstyne), "Put Your Arms Around Me Honey" (Albert Von Tilzer, Junie McCree), "Take It From Here," "Lulu From Louisville," "There's Danger In Dance," "Get the Money," "Old Demon Rum," "Beautiful Coney Island" (Ralph Rainger, Leo Robin), "Who Threw the Overalls In Mrs. Murphy's Chowder?" (George L. Giefer), "Darktown Strutters Ball" (Sheldon Brooks), medley: "Deep River," "Oh Susanna," "The Old Folks at Home" (Stephen Foster), "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" (Beth Slater Whitson, Leo Friedman), "Dengozo (Maxixe)" (Ernesto Nazareth). leave a comment
