Based on a play that opened in London, CONDUCT UNBECOMING is a fair adaptation but essentially a tempest in a teapot. It concerns the question of whether or not a woman was molested (like A PASSAGE TO INDIA) and turns into a contrived mystery. Faulkner is the accused, and he is defended by M. York in the secret trial run by the officers at a remote Indian outpost in the last century. S. York is the woman in question who accuses Faulkner of the deed. Essentially a courtroom piece, it is the forerunner of BREAKER MORANT in feeling but not as electric as that Aussie effort. Acting is uniformly good, and the script by Enders clearly delineates all that need be said. The major problem is that it remains a one-set work and somewhat claustrophobic despite yeoman efforts by Enders and Anderson to give it some air. Keach is the soldier acting as judge, the juiciest role as it requires him visibly to alter his strong feelings to convict whennew evidence is given. The ending is a great disappointment and a cop-out, but until then the picture sails along and involves the audience. Jeremy Clyde, of the singing group Chad and Jeremy, was the lead in the play, but, as usually happens, the studio preferred a cast of stars as insurance for their investment. It made no difference in this movie's box-office receipts, which were sparse. leave a comment
