Under the direction of veteran Fleischer, this superior sequel to the plodding CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982) boasts much more speed, skill, and ingenuity than its predecessor. Conan (Schwarzenegger) is hired by an evil queen (Douglas) to escort her virgin niece (d'Abo) and d'Abo's massive bodyguard (Chamberlain) on a mystical quest to find a magic gem. Unfortunately, what Schwarzenegger doesn't know is that Douglas has instructed Chamberlain to kill the big lug after they find the gem, and to bring D'Abo back to be sacrificed. Also along for the ride are an eccentric old wizard (Mako), Schwarzenegger's cowardly toady (Walter), and a wild woman (Jones), whom Conan rescued from a primordial tribe. Together the band battles all manner of creatures, mortal and supernatural, as they continue the quest. Instead of the ponderous seriousness of the first film, Fleischer injects a sense of humor into the proceedings and lets Schwarzenegger relax and have fun with the role. The rest of the cast has a good time as well. Jones, however, steals the show from her comrades and provides the most crowd-pleasing moments in her wild-woman role, which she portrays with wonderful abandon. Good fun. leave a comment
