Another political spaghetti western from director Corbucci, who developed the "Zapata-spaghetti" form, which infused the narrative with populist sentiments--seeing the bad guys on the Right and the good guys on the Left. In this sequel to THE PROFESSIONAL GUN (1968), Nero is a mercenary who signs up with revolutionary Milian (costumed to resemble Che Guevara) to help free pascifist professor Rey and his students, who are being held by Americans in Texas. Nero is actually after gold and Rey knows where it is. Along the way they meet Palance, an eccentric, pot-smoking gunslinger with a wooden hand and a pet falcon. Eventually, Nero's mercenary attitudes wear thin and Milian challenges him to a gunfight, but the duel is postponed when counterrevolutionaries attack. Though the material is promising, Corbucci overdirects and Palance overacts, spoiling any chnace the movie had for success. leave a comment
