Hope you like Heather Graham... a lot. She's in just about every scene of writer-director Lisa Krueger's willfully funky comedy, and even when she's not, she can be heard yammering away on the soundtrack. That's not necessarily a bad thing, unless you're immune to Miss Graham's charms. In a world of cheap talk and empty promises, Joline (Graham) is a rarity. The daughter of a failed marriage, she's a woman of her word, especially when that word is "I" followed closely by "do." Her husband Carl (Owen Wilson), however, has his own ideas about relationships. After nearly two years of marriage, he decamps for Texas, looking (understandably) for a little breathing room, and sends his wife a gentle Dear Jill postcard with no return address. Never one to renege on a vow — that wedding band she's had tattooed around her finger doesn't come off so easily — Joline vows to track her man down and bring him back alive. Even if it means resorting to the kind of behavior that would give the most tenacious stalker the creeps. Joline's not an easy character to sympathize with; she flatly refuses to face facts, even when she comes face-to face with Carl's new woman, Carmen (Patricia Velasquez), and his sexy next-door neighbor (Goran Visnjic), a papier-mâ ché artist who quickly developes a case of the hots for Joline. And, to be fair, we're probably not meant to. But we do need to like her, at least enough to tolerate her extreme and willful foolishness. Krueger's script is full of genuinely quirky touches — Carmen is a great character and, in a nice twist, becomes Joline's new best friend. But one can only imagine how different the film might have been with, say, Parker Posey or Catherine Keener — truly funky actresses with some real edge — in the lead. leave a comment --Ken Fox
