In an effort to further his career, school board official Paul Hartwood (Judge Reinhold) heads for an educational conference in Chicago. Unfortunately, he stirs up the rancor of his wife Laura (Joely Fisher) with a last-minute pronouncement about uprooting the family and relocating to the Big City once he lands his dream job. When his divorce-phobic son Jason (Cody Jones) overhears his parents arguing, he leaps into action. Accompanied by his teen sister Celina (Melody Johnson), Jason sneaks off to Chicago where, using his computer wizardry, he re-routes Paul to several wrong destinations, including a bachelorette party and a gambling den run by Chinese criminals. Hiding inside a store, Jason sneakily stuffs jewelry into Paul's pocket, and Paul gets arrested. But when Jason and Celina unexpectedly spot their mom with a handsome stranger, it appears that their parents' relationship may be past saving. In this flimsy farce, Father Doesn't Know Best. Expecting the audience to view Rheinhold's character as an All-American boob, the film wants us to laugh at the assault on Paul's dignity and accept his son's tough-love, even though Jason's antics make him a worthy candidate for juvenile hall or reform school. When Paul doesn't scold Jason for his meddling, choosing instead to blame himself for being an absentee dad, viewers may want to launch a counter-offensive against Family Values. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
