The subculture of serious comic book lovers is ripe to be mined for stories that combine pathos and comedy, but so far it's inspired only misfires like this one. Grieving Mrs. Cresswell (Eileen Brennan) us besieged by collectors after the death of her couch-potato son, all desperate to acquire his trove of rare comic books. Hoping to score freebies for himself, one slimy customer, Conan (Danny Masterson), has spilled the beans about the Cresswell collection and pitted the town's two comic book shops against each other. Although Raymond McGillicuddy (Donal Logue) appreciates the comics on aesthetic grounds, he could also use the revenue this merchandise would bring. Unfortunately, Raymond's profit-conscious competitors, Norman and Judy Link (Michael Rapaport, Natasha Lyonne) will stop at nothing to obtain the collectibles for their shop. Only Raymond's sad-sack pal, Archie (D.J. Squalls), treats Mrs. Cresswell with genuine kindness. Mrs. Cresswell is nobody's fool and lets the rivals do her errands and spruce up her property. When she proves unresponsive to selling, the desperate Raymond hires a career thief, Carter (Cary Elwes), to coerce Mrs. Cresswell into parting with her memories. Conan tips off Judy about the planned home invasion, so she decides that she can earn Mrs. Cresswell's gratitude by foiling the robbery. Having bonded with the old lady, Archie worries that she doesn't realize how serious the stakes actually are. Before the ownership of the Cresswell archives is settled, a stabbing, an act of arson, another homicide and a police standoff transpire. This black comedy rides roughshod over audience sensibilities, ridiculing its characters while expecting viewers to sympathize with their mania. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
