Full of hilarious plot twists and blessed with brilliant performances from a stellar cast, HERE COMES MR. JORDAN is a thoroughly beguiling fantasy with a boxing subplot. Joe Pendleton (Robert Montgomery), a saxophone-playing up-and-coming prizefighter, crashes while flying his single-engine plane, and his spirit is plucked up by an anxious heavenly messenger (Edward Everett Horton) who learns later that Joe was supposed to have lived for another 50 years and was destined to be the world heavyweight champion. It's up to the messenger's superior, Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains, amusingly sinister and atypical for this kind of role), to help Joe find another body in which to finish his life. JORDAN suffers from being too talky and the extraneous romance, but has remained an audience perennial. A weak nonsports sequel, DOWN TO EARTH, followed in 1947, and the story was remade with a football backdrop in 1978 as the pallid HEAVEN CAN WAIT. leave a comment
