Fox's answer to Paramount's GOING MY WAY and THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S is this delightful, gentle story about two French nuns, Sister Margaret (Loretta Young) and Sister Scolastica (Celeste Holm), who leave their abbey in Europe and arrive in a New England town called Bethlehem, intending to establish a children's hospital there. The nuns are determined to build the hospital and cannot be talked out of it, nor can anyone resist their charm as they cajole their way into achieving their aim. A painter who specializes in religious subjects, Miss Potts (Elsa Lanchester), allows them to use her studio--a stable she's converted and furnished--as a home base, and from there the nuns go forth and discreetly hustle everyone in the area in order to achieve their goal. Clare Booth Luce, a Catholic convert, wrote this story of faith, and her deep beliefs show through every frame. Although very Catholic in its milieu and intent, the movie also celebrates tenacity in general and demonstrates that faith can move molehills, if not mountains. leave a comment
