The Comancheros

1961, Movie, NR, 107 mins

starstarstarstar
Texas Ranger Wayne enlists the aid of gambler Whitman in the apprehension of a group of sleazy white outlaws, led by Persoff, who help the Comanche run guns and whiskey. When it is learned that ex-Confederate officer Persoff plans to build an empire in Mexico and use his Indian pals to attack the Union, Wayne's job becomes more pressing. The last film to be directed by classic Hollywood filmmaker Michael Curtiz (he died the next year), THE COMANCHEROS sadly has none of the style and adventure of his great films of the 1930s and 1940s. Part of the blame should be placed on Wayne, who was entering his self-parody stage that seemed to make fun of the great screen persona he had created and developed over the years, a style of acting still misunderstood by most critics today. THE COMANCHEROS is not a terrible film; in fact much of it is entertaining. But it is obviously the effort of two talented men far from their peak powers. leave a comment
