This excellent western reworking of Walsh's own HIGH SIERRA has kindhearted outlaw McCrea deciding that he and his gang must pull one more robbery before disappearing forever. Inevitably, a posse tracks down the gang, and McCrea and his half-breed lover, Mayo, are killed in a romantic, yet horrifying, blaze of gunfire at the film's climax. Just as HIGH SIERRA was primarily a study of the character played by Humphrey Bogart, COLORADO TERRITORY analyzes the tragedy of the good McCrea, who sadly chooses a life of crime. Hauntingly photographed in richly contrasting black and white tones, the film is truly a film noir western, not only in its look, but in its themes of despair, the inability to love, and the inevitability of doom.
