COLOR PURPLE, THE
starstarstarstar
Steven Spielberg took a lot of flack for this adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about black women in the turn-of-the-century South. He may not have been the ideal director for such difficult material, but the fact remains that he brought it to the big screen when few others were willing to try. The film also introduced Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey as serious actors, and they're both excellent. Read the complete review for The Color Purple

COLOR RUNS

The Broadway musical The Color Purple — I thought the full title was "Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Color Purple, Presented by Oprah Winfrey." Did I imagine that? — will begin a national tour in April 2007, starting with a six-month engagement in (all together now in an Oprah-like yell) Chi-ca-gooooooooo! read more

One Life to Live has cast Brandon Victor Dixon as Daryl, Dorian Lord's (Robin Strasser) new assistant at Craze magazine. Incidentally, Daytime Emmy nominee Renee Goldsberry (Evangeline) was part of that same production's original cast, in which she played Nettie. read more

Out of respect for her privacy, TVGuide.com has chosen to wait until after the holidays to report that One Life to Live's Renée Elise Goldsberry (Evangeline) suffered a miscarriage. Although she had cut short her run in Broadway's The Color Purple specifically because she was expecting, Goldsberry still left the production as planned. read more

"OPRAH, MEA CULPA"

Oprah Winfrey has agreed to appear on David Letterman's late-night talker for the first time since he switched networks to CBS in 1993. Oprah, out to tout her Broadway production of The Color Purple, will sit with Dave on Dec. 1. Oh, this can't be good: The other guest for that night is Deepak Chopra. read more
