Me And The Colonel

1958, Movie, NR, 109 mins

Despite the fine performances by the two leads, this film never quite delivers the satirical punch it thinks it does. Kaye is a Jewish refugee stuck in Paris shortly before the Nazis arrive. He manages to get hold of a car and takes along one passenger, an anti-Semitic Polish colonel played by Jurgens. Putting his prejudice on hold to save his skin, Jurgens has his driver stop and pick up girl friend Maurey. But Kaye's wit and charm appeal to her and she switches her affections to him, much to the chagrin of Jurgens. The trio hide in a castle to escape the Germans but are captured anyway. Kaye pretends that Jurgens is a long lost cousin and they work their way out of the situation. Slowly the anti-Semite's feelings change and he grows fond of Kaye and forgets his prejudices. Kaye and Jurgens play well off each other and really carry the film despite poorly linked sequences and a story that never quite knows where to go. It becomes highly predictable and far too sentimental for it's own good. leave a comment
