Colonel Chabert

Though reported killed in the Napoleonic Wars, Raimu, an aristocrat, returns to his palatial home and discovers that his wife, thinking him dead, has remarried. Never having loved Raimu, and happier with her wealthier present husband, she accuses Raimu of being an imposter and has him committed to an asylum. Raimu escapes and begins to wander the streets, befriending penniless people who sleep in the local poorhouses. When evidence is uncovered that proves his true identity, Raimu nonetheless renounces his past and stays with his poverty-stricken comrades.
