A cynical and unsympathetic but often amusing look at college football and big-headed coaches, this William Wellman-directed film features a woefully miscast Dick Powell as a singing gridiron star who lacks discipline but manages to get it all right in the big game. Pat O'Brien is a
delight as the tyrannical coach who does the disciplining, but his greatest coaching role was yet to come (see KNUTE ROCKNE--ALL AMERICAN, 1940). The film is notable for an early appearance by John Wayne, as well as Ward Bond.
