Cole Younger, Gunfighter: Review

After protesting the dishonesty of local government, cowpoke Best is forced out of town, leaving his sweetheart, Dalton, open to the advances of Merlin. Best befriends kindhearted outlaw Lovejoy, and when Best is accused of murders Merlin committed, Lovejoy bursts into the courtroom and "sticks up" the proceedings. Merlin is exposed as the actual killer, Best is reunited with Dalton, and Lovejoy returns to the secret life of a frontier fugitive. This romanticized view of Cole Younger uses the ruthless desperado as a kind of savior for the purpose of resolving the familiar drama. This is a lightweight effort from scriptwriter Mainwaring, who did much better with tougher pictures like OUT OF THE PAST and BABY FACE NELSON. It was the last film for Lovejoy, whose career was in decline; he was to die four years later. leave a comment
