COLD WATER re-invents the standard troubled youth melodrama with a combination of sturdy intelligence and graceful artistry. Olivier Assayas's partly autobiographical film (shot in 1994 but released in the US in 1996) suffers only from a certain emotional distance that robs the viewer of
a potentially more fulfilling experience.
COLD WATER takes place in Paris, 1972, where two teenagers (Cyprien Fouquet and Virginie Ledoyen) fall in love against the odds. Gilles (Fouquet) is suffocated by his domineering father (Laszlo Szabo), who refuses to let his son grow up, while Christine's life is a battleground, with troubles
between her and her father (Jackie Berroyer)...
