Direct-to-video action films are usually sufficiently derivative that can fans fast-forward through the expository scenes. But this futuristic, martial arts-adventure — easily Gary Daniels' best vehicle — should be enjoyed from start to finish for its superb kickboxing choreography and quick-drawing showdowns. In the not-so-faraway future, a comet smashes into Earth and spreads devastation and plague. In this uncertain world, twin brothers Roland and Oliver (both played by Daniels) take divergent paths: Loner Roland earns his daily bread as a bounty hunter, while gentle Oliver settles down with his loving wife, Christine (Barbara Crampton). After years of viral research, the Emergency Council has discovered how to extract a plague vaccine from an immunity gene carried by only six individuals, one of whom is Oliver. On the prowl for gasoline or minerals, highwayman Little Ray (Bryan Genesse) guns down the scientific convoy carrying the precious human cargo. Oliver is killed, but Christine escapes and joins Roland at the home of his late parents. Little Ray realizes that the vaccine would be priceless on the black market, so, with the aid of a government lab technician whose life he spares, Little Ray tracks Christine's movements and discovers that she's pregnant, something Christine herself doesn't yet know. Roland repeatedly extricates Christine from Little Ray's clutches as they travel to a government safety zone. But when they finally reach the zone, soldiers inform Christine that she's with child and attempt to whisk her away to a medical center. And Little Ray isn't far behind, still determined to capture Christine and sell her to the highest bidder. This brawler, which reworks classic Western mythology into a post-Apocalyptic adventure, can stand proudly alongside any acclaimed Hong Kong kickboxing spectacular. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
