Cafe society: Iggy Pop and Tom Waits
starstarstarstar
Veteran independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch's uneven series of droll vignettes (some of which have been shown as standalone shorts) is linked by recurring themes and images; many participants are veterans of feature-length Jarmusch projects while others are simply cool. In "Strange to Meet You," Italian actor Roberto Begnini and comedian Steven Wright (the voice of RESERVOIR DOGS' "K Billy's Super Sounds of the '70s") riff on their mutual love of coffin nails and caffeine. "Twins" pits temperamentally opposed African-American twins (siblings Cinque and Joie Lee) against a white waiter (Steve Buscemi) in a Memphis diner; while purportedly reformed smokers Tom Waits and Iggy Pop get acquainted "Somewhere in California." Joe (Joe Rigano) and Vinny (Vinny Vella) chastise each other for their bad habits — Vinny's chain-smoking and Joe's marathon coffee consumption — in "Those Things'll Kill Ya," while "Renee" (Renee French) endures the attentions of an over-solicitous waiter (E.J. Rodriguez). Old friends Alex (Alex Descas) and Isaach (Isaach de Bankole) squabble in "No Problem," while the "Cousins" are movie star Cate and her ne'er-do-well cousin, Shelly (both played by Cate Blanchett), whose awkward reunion in a posh hotel lobby is poisoned by Shelly's envy. Indie rockers Jack and Meg White star in the slight "Jack Shows Meg His Tesla Coil;" in "Cousins?" character actor Alfred (Alfred Molina) gets the snooty brush off from up-and-comer Steve (Steve Coogan) when he tells him they're distantly related. Wu-Tang Clan founders RZA and GZA have both sworn off caffeine in "Delirium," and offer Bill Murray, who's pretending to be a waiter, some advice about kicking the habit. Finally, Taylor and Bill (former Warhol superstar Taylor Mead and underground actor Bill Rice) enjoy a slightly melancholy coffee break in an empty warehouse. Made between 1986 and 2002, these slight skits distill Jarmusch's aesthetic to its fundamentals: glistening B&W cinematography, long takes in medium- and long-shot, retro-hipster decor and unhurried pacing. Even segments that must have been carefully scripted, like Blanchett's, have the slightly aimless air of an improv exercise. Jarmusch's style is so unifying that only the evident youth of certain actors, like Begnini, gives away the fact that some segments were made more than 15 years before others. While sometimes evocative, they don't add up to a satisfying movie any more than, as several characters are cautioned, coffee and cigarettes constitute a healthy lunch. --Maitland McDonagh
