More than thirty years after this film was made, the comedy version, POLICE ACADEMY, was a huge success. This was not, probably because it could have used some humor to lighten the ordinary tale it told. Meeker, Richards and Horton are three aspiring policemen taking the three-month motorcycle course at the police academy. Meeker is a confident Jimmy Cagney type without the elan to carry it off. The three buddies are like the Geste brothers until Richards is killed when two hijackers run him down. The rest of the film is a chase that culminates when Meeker nails the gang at the finale. Most of the actors were bit players before getting their big chances in this second-biller. It didn't enhance their careers much. Craig, who had already been a star (THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, THE HUMAN COMEDY, KISMET, etc.), was on his way down. He was educated at Rice Institute and had intended being a doctor until sidetracked by the acting bug. There was a rumor to the effect that Craig, born James Meador, had taken his name from a role he played in CRAIG'S WIFE in the same way that Gig Young and L. Q. Jones took their screen names from roles in films. His first film was THUNDER TRAIL. Producer Grady was the son of the MGM chief of talent at that time. Nepotism will out. leave a comment
