When a terrorist (James Ryan) kidnaps the queen and prince of a Middle Eastern monarchy in an attempt prevent a disarmament agreement with the West from being implemented, Harry Applegate (Don Gordon) head of US covert operations, tries to persuade imprisoned commando Monroe Bieler (Robert Ginty) to rescue the royal pair. Only when he discovers that the mission will give him a chance to get even with Tabrak (Ryan) does Bieler take on the job. Accompanied by Sam (Shannon Tweed), the beauty who springs him from captivity, old pal Dutch (Cameron Mitchell), and an American agent who's loyalties are suspect (Kevin Brophy), Monroe sets out after Tabrak. As in so many other action-adventure revenge fantasies, narrative implausibilities and perfunctory characters are rife in CODE NAME VENGEANCE, and the battle against personal injustice that provides the film's heroic theme is quickly obscured by preposterous and pedestrian action scenes. Despite its flaws, however, CODE NAME VENGEANCE is notable in its sympathetic portrayal of its Third World ruler's predicament, a rarity in this sort of film. leave a comment
