A quality action film that finally brought star Chuck Norris out of cheap kung fu pictures and gave him an opportunity to appear in a well-produced actioner with a decent script, good technical support, and a solid cast. Norris is a tough vice cop about to send his elite unit into a tenement building to make a big drug bust. However, Latino gang members, rivals of the drug dealers, burst in, slaughter the drug dealers, and steal the goods. In the confusion Ralph Foody, a bored old cop near retirement, accidentally shoots and kills an innocent young Latino boy. Joseph Guzaldo, Foody's young partner, is horrifed to see the veteran plant a pistol in the dead boy's hand to make the shooting look justified. But Foody reminds Guzaldo of the police department's unwritten "code of silence," which forbids cops to blow the whistle on one another. Meanwhile the botched drug bust starts a bloody gang war. CODE OF SILENCE is a solidly directed action film that successfully combines character development, humor, and the requisite thrills in a very entertaining mix. The viewer cares about the characters because they have distinct personalities and emotions that separate them from those usually found in the gore-oriented actioners of the 1980s. leave a comment
