MacMurray and his band leave their Chicago-based stint on a Lake Michigan showboat for California, where MacMurray has been promised an audition at the title nightclub. MacMurray, a sax player in a band before he went into movies, gets a chance to toot in this entertaining film and also vocalizes in a serenade to Hilliard.
