A gem. Director Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) goes back to high school — this time in Beverly Hills — and the result is pricelessly fresh and funny. Alicia Silverstone and her best friend Stacey Dash are both fabulously rich and, well, fabulous — till they resolve to repudiate their shallow worldview and dedicate themselves to doing good. Does Father Know Best? Dan Hedaya Previews a Monky Christmas

Although TV lovers sometimes have trouble coming up with his name, they always recognize his face. As one of Hollywood's most prolific character actors, Dan Hedaya has been working steadily since the late '70s, playing a hirsute assortment of cops, lawyers, cheating or cuckolded husbands and, in the underrated Nixon-era comedy Dick, a U.S. president. He adds another eccentric character to his résumé when he guests as Adrian's long-lost truck-driver dad on USA's hit crimedy Monk (Nov. 17, at 10 pm/ET). TVGuide.com: I was thrilled when I heard that you were going to play Adrian's dad. But then I started to wonder if perhaps you're too young for the part. Dan Hedaya: I had that thought as well. I'm not old enough to be his father, really. I wo read more

Casting News: NBC Singles Out Alicia Silverstone

Clueless' Alicia Silverstone has been tapped to replace Pascale Hutton in the role of Georgia, a successful doctor, in The Singles Table, NBC's mid-season comedy about strangers who bond after sharing a table (and, I presume, undercooked beef) at a mutual pal's wedding.... Lolita Davidovich (no relation to moi), whose recent TV credits include The L Word and Monk, but not Miss Match, has been cast opposite Lili Taylor in the Lifetime drama pilot State of Mind, a look at the professional and personal lives of therapists. read more

Scrubs Star Is a Wizard of Ha-Has

Tonight at 9 pm/ET, NBC's Scrubs presents its 100th episode, featuring — no, not the death of someone close to Clark Kent — a humorous homage to The Wizard of Oz. This week's second helping guest-stars Jason Bateman and a whole lotta angry ostriches. Is this show officially off the hook? TVGuide.com spoke with Donald Faison, aka Turk, about crafting Scrubs' weekly remedy for the prime-time blahs. TVGuide.com: Donald Faison, pardon my French, but you are on one damn funny show.Donald Faison: Thanks, but where did you speak French in that? TVGuide.com: Um, when I said "Faison"? So do you get that a lot, people telling you that Scrubs read more

It seems like every other ...

Question: It seems like every other movie I see advertised is based on a TV show, like The Dukes of Hazzard. But what about the other way around? I know there was a series based on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but what other TV series have been based on a movie, and were any of them good?

Answer: There have been a handful of top-notch TV shows based on movies. The flop Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) was revived as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); Robert Altman's acerbic M*A*S*H* (1970) became the long-running M*A*S*H (1972-1983); Neil Simon read more
