When shy and somewhat unstable Simmons is accused of murdering the handyman who worked for her guardians (Jones and Dresdel), Howard, having been fired from his job in the British Secret Service, comes to her aid. Convinced that Simmons is innocent, he helps her escape from jail and the two flee to Liverpool where they plan to stow away on a ship bound for Mexico.
