Susan Sarandon understandably won an Academy Award nomination for her superb portrayal of Reggie Love, a tough anti-establishment lawyer whose hard-boiled surface hides a heart of pure Jell-O. When young a young boy (Brad Renfro) witnesses the murder of a US Senator and subsequently becomes the prey of murderous gangster (Anthony LaPaglia), the kid and his mother (Mary-Louise Parker) turn to feisty recovering alcoholic Love for help.
