Literally, a slice of life. Agnes Varda's second feature opens with an overhead shot of a table, two pairs of women's hands, and a deck of tarot cards. The woman whose fortune is being read, Cleo (played superbly by Corinne Marchand), is told she has cancer. Cleo is dreading the results of a recent medical test and believes her fortune. The rest of the film is a chronicle of the next 90 minutes in her life. Photographed almost exclusively in the streets of Paris, CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 is a portrait of a woman whose view of life has previously never extended past her own vanity and singing success. Faced with the possibility of death, however, Cleo begins to perceive things differently--finding beauty and life in all things. Curiously, the only one of the film's scenes to fall completely flat is a silent comedy sketch that features Anna Karina, Jean-Luc Godard, Sami Frey, Jean-Claude Brialy, Eddie Constantine, and Yves Robert. One especially nice moment is a song, "Sans Toi" (by Michel Legrand and Varda), which Marchand delivers directly into the camera. leave a comment
