Unusual comedy-drama that questions the possibility of domestic happiness in the inner city. Carroll is an impoverished mother of six, trying to hold her family together in an environment that rewards cheating and promises only disappointment. She falls in love with garbage man Jones, but he runs away when it looks like a long-term commitment is in the offing. Her children track him down and convince him to return, leaving the film on an upbeat note. Excellent performances by Carroll and Jones highlight this film, and the soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield with Gladys Knight and the Pips is terrific.
