Some astounding special effects (though there are also some bad ones) lift this film a cut above the usual sword-and-sorcery offering. Up in the Olympian pantheon, Zeus (Laurence Olivier), Thetis (Maggie Smith), and Hera (Claire Bloom) float around speculating as to what new folly
humankind will be up to next; meanwhile, Perseus (Harry Hamlin) spends most of the picture rescuing Andromeda (Judi Bowker) and conquering obstacles and dangers for what seems like eons. No one takes anything seriously, and the visuals are fairly impressive. On the other hand, the dialog is
stilted and the actors all play in different styles.
