Sentimental claptrap with Whoopi Goldberg, who should have known better, playing the kind of warm and wonderful mammy figure that went out with Louise Beavers. Kathleen Quinlan and Michael Ontkean are a wealthy couple who suffer the loss of an infant daughter. The grief-stricken Quinlan goes to Jamaica to recover and meets hotel maid Goldberg. She's so taken with Goldberg that she invites her to her Baltimore mansion to serve as maid to the family, which includes a 15-year-old son (Neil Patrick Harris). Goldberg quickly becomes a close friend to and positive influence on the troubled Harris, and in return he helps her deal with a tragic secret from her past. After appearing in a series of action comedies (BURGLAR, FATAL BEAUTY, JUMPIN' JACK FLASH), Whoopi Goldberg here made her first stab at drama since her film debut in THE COLOR PURPLE, and it's simply appalling. She's mawkishly maternal, and her patois is about as convincing as Lionel Richie's. leave a comment
