Fritz Lang's finest film since The Big Heat, and his last great success. Three newsmen — Thomas Mitchell, George Sanders and James Craig — are each in line for the job of editor-in-chief of a New York City tabloid. In a perverse power game, the newspaper's owner (Vince Price) offers the top spot to the man who can nab "The Lipstick Killer" (John Barrymore), a sex murderer who preys on beautiful women at night.
