In 1947 the inhabitants of Pola, Yugoslavia, were given the choice of going to Italy or remaining when the Communists took over. One family that decided to stay--a father who believes in communism, his wife, and their young child--runs into difficulties when the child falls sick and needs more medical attention than it can get in Pola.
