City Of Pain

In 1947 the inhabitants of Pola, Yugoslavia, were given the choice of going to Italy or remaining when the Communists took over. One family that decided to stay--a father who believes in communism, his wife, and their young child--runs into difficulties when the child falls sick and needs more medical attention than it can get in Pola. A Yugoslavian official, who has eyes for the wife, manages to get the mother and child to Italy, while the father remains behind. Too late the father realizes his mistake when he is thrown into a concentration camp from which he tries to escape, but is killed. A drab, humorless, political tome.
