This F.W. Murnau film was started as a silent movie. Meant to have been an epic of the wheatfields, its original title was BREAD, which would account for the film's obsession with wheat. The story takes a long time to unfold. Charles Farrell plays a son of a farmer who goes to town to
sell his wheat and find a wife. Though wheat prices are poor, he does find a wife. Back on the farm, his mother is delighted but his father is suspicious of the city girl. A farmhand decides to make a play for the new woman of the farm, and goes into her bedroom during a storm. The father walks in
on them, and the son promptly beats up the farmhand, exacting a confession.
