When Bulgarian dignitaries approach entertainment reporter Roberts (Gary Daniels) with a top-secret assignment, it's not exactly an offer he can't refuse, but when he learns that he's been recommended by his best friend Charlie Venco (Richard Clarkin), a specialist in blood disorders, he reconsiders. Upon his arrival in Bulgaria, Roberts is informed by officials that Charlie died in a boating accident. Unconvinced, he approaches Colonel Kozlovska (Meglena Karalambova) who vacillates about enlisting him to help solve the mystery surrounding Charlie's death. With the spotty assistance of Charlie's stripper girlfriend Alexa (Carol Campbell), Roberts learns that, in exchange for AIDS funding, Charlie developed a highly addictive recreational drug called Blue Mist for the Russian Mob. The government theorizes that Charlie got greedy, but as Charlie's cronies are picked off one by one and the Mob and Interpol square off, it's clear to Roberts that the truth is more complicated. Improbable to the max, this schlocky actioner features a journalist who "dabbles" in martial arts; considering how effectively Roberts vanquishes his foes, he's clearly the most naturally gifted kickboxer in history. Essentially, this is a moron's version of THE THIRD MAN. However, instead of weaving a tapestry of black market chicanery and scientific malfeasance, it manipulatively incorporates the AIDS epidemic to invest its exploitative, assembly-line plot with some contemporary gravitas. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
