Cinderfella

1960, Movie, NR, 88 mins

This overly sentimental, not particularly funny musical satire of the Cinderella story features a gender change and Jerry Lewis, who both starred and produced. The essentials of the original fairy tale are all in place, with Lewis as the put-upon Fella, much abused by his wicked stepmother (Judith Anderson), but although director Frank Tashlin (THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT) and his star make a big play for laughs, the film suffers from overkill. In comedy a little can be a lot, and a lot can be too much, as is the case in this film, wherein the camera repeatedly lingers too long on Lewis' mugging and rubbery footwork. Still, Lewis and the film have their moments, and Ed Wynn is wonderful as the Fairy Godfather. Songs: "Somebody," "Princess Waltz," "Let Me Be a People" (Harry Warren, Jack Brooks). leave a comment
