Darryl Ponicsan wrote the screenplay based on his own novel and it might have played better if someone else had adapted it. This was a terrific book that failed on film. It's tough to lay the blame for its failure on anyone in particular but if honors had to be awarded they would go to Caan, who is so intent on being macho that he forgets about humanity. The title refers to the pass given sailors that requires them to return to quarters by midnight. Caan is a happy-go-lucky sailor who's in Seattle for temporary medical treatment before he gets a new assignment. He meets Mason in a bar where she occasionally picks up tricks. They play a game of pool and he beats her; the reward is her body. She takes him home where he encounters the first of many unexpected twists; Mason has an 11-year-old mulatto son played very well by Calloway. Caan falls in love Mason, much to no one's surprise, but first has to figure a way out of the Navy and face some additional complications before he can join her little family. Former actor Rydell pulls out all the stops for sentimentality in his direction. There's nothing wrong with a good cry, but when it seems that every frame is geared to extract that reaction, one can help but feel manipulated. Nominated for three Oscars: Best Actress (Mason, who lost to Glenda Jackson for A TOUCH OF CLASS), Best Score and Best Song. leave a comment
