Does for poker what The Hustler did for pool. Steve McQueen stars as the Kid, a gambler of some repute who's in New Orleans hustling small-timers when Edward G. Robinson, the acknowledged king of poker, rolls into town looking for some action. He finds it. Norman Jewison replaced Sam Peckinpah as director, and this may have affected the rhythm, but the climatic marathon poker match — edited by Hal Ashby — is a nail-biting sight to behold.
