The film involves the fate of 11 people selected by the US government to participate in a below-ground experiment to determine how they will fare when they are told that the rest of the human race has been destroyed by a nuclear holocaust. This strange cross-section of humanity includes a hard-drinking businessman, Cooper; a member of Congress, Muldaur; a novelist, Cord; a black athlete, Kilpatrick; and the crazed government official who thought the whole thing up, Dillman.
