Bronson is a half-breed horse rancher in New Mexico who takes in teenage runaway Van Patten. He clashes with wealthy breeder Bozzuffi and falls in love with Bozzuffi's sister, Ireland. When Bozzuffi sees what is going on, he has Bronson beaten up and jailed. Bronson returns to his ranch, sets the horses free, burns down the buildings, and sends Van Patten away. Then he rides off to start life anew. Bronson packed up wife Ireland, their six children, and three tutors to Almeria, Spain, for filming. Originally Lino Ventura was to play Maral; but when he saw how small the role was, he walked out, and the almost unknown Bozzuffi was hired to replace him. An interesting departure for Bronson--rather than being the vengeance-obsessed killer seen so many times before (and since), he plays a sensitive man who wants only to be left alone. When he is brutalized by the brother of the woman he loves, he doesn't try to save his honor by killing the man and getting the girl; instead he chucks the whole thing, destroying what his enemies covet before disappearing. Beware of television prints that eliminate the sexual tension between Bronson and Ireland--sequences that provide the major concern of the film. leave a comment
