Directed by Joan Micklin Silver (HESTER STREET, CROSSING DELANCEY) and based on a novel by Ann Beattie, CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER focuses on Charles (Heard), an office worker who falls in love with Laura (Hurt) while she is separated from her husband. When Laura returns to her spouse, Charles remains obsessed with her, sitting outside her home in his car watching the lights, even going to visit her and her husband, accompanied by his good friend Sam (Riegert). Retaining the mournful tone of Beattie's excellent novel, Silver delivers a slow-moving, occasionally funny, but deeply affecting film blessed with outstanding understated performances by Heard, Hurt, Riegert, and screen veteran Grahame, on hand in a memorable turn as Charles's suicidal mother. Look for author Beattie in a bit part as a waitress. leave a comment
