Retaining the mournful tone of Ann Beattie's excellent novel, writer-director Joan Micklin Silver delivers a deeply affecting film blessed with outstanding, understated performances. John Heard stars as an office worker who falls in love with Mary Beth Hurt while she is separated from her husband. When she returns to her spouse, he remains obsessed with her.
