CHILDREN OF THE CORN is another of the lame King adaptations that popped up during the first half of the 1980s, this time based on a short story. Horton and Hamilton are a young couple driving cross-country to Seattle--where Burt, just out of medical school, will begin his internship. Somewhere in Nebraska they find themselves in a small farming town in which the children have murdered all the adults and have set themselves up as a religious cult that sacrifices grown-ups to some sort of corn god, which burrows its way through the fields. After the opening, wherein the kids slaughter their folks just after Sunday services, the film takes a steep nosedive into tedium, leaving director Kiersch to show off his gratuitous visual style. Female lead Hamilton would achieve recognition, later in the year, with the surprise sci-fi hit THE TERMINATOR. leave a comment
