Chicago Confidential

1957, Movie, NR, 75 mins

An ambitious state's attorney, Keith, innocently uses false evidence to convict union leader Foran of murder only to discover that the killing was a frame-up and the real criminals are power-hungry mobsters attempting to take over the union. To redeem himself, Keith devotes his time to proving Foran innocent and cleaning up the union. Keith gives a strong performance, and onetime western star Foran, though shown only briefly, is solid as the victimized union boss. Garland is believable as the union chief's lady who stands by her man. Good supporting cast, especially Elisha Cook, Jr., as a drunken bindlestiff, makes this film noir interesting and sustains the mood and story, which was lifted from the pages of the true crime book by Lait and Mortimer (as part of the "confidential" series these two journalists made popular in the 1950s). leave a comment
