Sort of a lady's version of "Goodbye Mr. Chips" spanning fifty years in the life of a midwestern schoolteacher, Scott, whose two frustrated romances leave her without hope of marriage and concentrating instead on the lives of her students. This is a visual slice of midwestern life and
philosophies from the 1880s. Good direction gets the most out of a difficult assignment. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Score.
